With three wins under their belts the Sheffield team travelled to York in high spirits and with an air of confidence having a 10 strong bench. Within the 1st minute Wesley Skaines assisted both Dale Stennett and Dennis Kaka to put 4 points onto the Sheffield scoreboard. The first quarter saw some lovely drives to basket by Lemar Darien-Campbell and Dennis Kaka; a steal by Tommy Price, passed to Lemar Darien-Campbell who finished it in the basket; some great defence by Marcus Welsh and Connor Dixon giving the Sharks a super 20 point lead.
After a sluggish start to the 2nd quarter Sheffield regained their drive and had a string of baskets resulting from Henryk Krajniewski getting a rebound and placing it firmly in the basket, Dennis Kaka’s steal at half-court and then a drive to basket. In the 6th minute Dennis made a successful 3 point shot followed by some great team work with Tommy Price getting a defensive rebound, passing it to Dennis Kaka who sent it to Marcus Welsh to score with no sign of the York defence. By the end of this quarter Sheffield had 3 successful steals from the York side by Josh Edwards, Marcus Welsh and Dennis Kaka, ending the first half with Sheffield 42 points ahead of their York opponents.
The second half started with optimism by the Sheffield side of this being a game where they could once again score a century or more. A pass by Wesley Skaines saw Dennis take his second three pointer, that was followed by a third in the last 3 seconds of this quarter. Dale Stennett and Wesley Skaines were on form, as between them they scored 48 points, making strong drives to the basket and defending superbly. Tommy Price also put 4 points onto Sheffield’s score, one straight after the other in the 9th minute. By the end of this quarter it was certainly looking as if Sheffield would make that 100 score and we were left wondering who would be bringing the doughnuts!
During the final quarter Sheffield continued to play hard against a York side who fought and kept their heads held high to the end. In the 5th minute Wesley Skaines put Sheffield on 100 points from a free throw. Sheffield had a string of baskets and free throws that increased their lead dramatically and together with some excellent passing of the ball the game ended with a spectacular 3 pointer by David Frost in the last 20 seconds – what a superb end to the game!
