The third round of the Sureshot cup saw Midlands Conference mouthful ‘Sporting Club West Bromwich Albion’ visit All Saints Sports Centre.
After a frustrating defensive performance in Newcastle the day before, the Sharks were determined to produce a ‘shut-out’ performance this time. Indeed, Sheffield’s pressure was quickly on display and converted into points as the home side raced out to an early and commanding lead. Renny continued his run of good form, excelling as the primary ball handler with Conor Faulkner still sidelined with injury. Callum and Josh were also in on the act helping their team to a 37-14 lead at the end of 10mins.
It was announced in the huddle between quarters that 14 points was double the amount the young Sharks should have allowed and a better effort called for in the 2nd period. Some may say this was asking too much but this team have set their own standards over the years and need to live up to them. The squad responded well and held WBA to a single basket in the period. Many players contributed to this defensive effort with Jonni, Zach, Nathan and Trent getting in on the act. Other Highlights of the 1st half included another two handed stuff from Josh and an athletic tip-in from Sheu which caused some debate in the stands as to whether or not it technically qualified as a dunk.
With a 43 point lead to start the 2nd half the rest of the game deteriorated as the Sharks tried to keep concentration and energy levels high whilst trying to practice a variety of offensive options. Unfortunately the Standards of the Sheffield boys dropped significantly allowing the visitors to score more than they should. In addition George Brownell, who was showing some strong and creative finishing touches re-sprained his ankle to add to a seemingly endless run of injuries faced so far this season. Hopefully the Christmas break will allow the team to rest any niggles and come back strong in the New Year.
Overall this was a positive display highlighted by a powerful 1st half performance and another step forward in terms of offensive fluidity.
Northants Thunder await Sheffield in the next round, hopefully the Sharks can perform better against them than in their previous league meeting.
