Sharks 2137 6786
Nova 14 21 2737
The second round of fixtures for the 2009/10 season began with a visit from Notts Nova. After a long lay-off the Sharks were keen to get back to action. The rust built up over the Christmas break was all too apparent in the opening quarter as Sheffield could not seem to finish even the simplest of shots, were turning the ball over at an alarming rate & giving Nova too many 2nd chance opportunities to score points. A late rally featuring strong drives from Josh and a ‘3’ from Conor gave the Sharks a 21-14 lead.
The 2nd period saw a noted improvement from the Sheffield boys on the defensive end limiting the chances for the visitors. However the boys continued to struggle on the offensive end as the concepts of a new system are yet to be fully understood. Despite this, Josh and Henryk did manage to contribute to a 16-7 stanza.
Sheffield finally began to click offensively in the 3rd & the spaces began to open up for all. Renny had a strong quarter with 8 points and did a great job of pressuring the Nova guards. Indeed the Sharks’ defence as a whole continued to impress, holding the visitors to 6 points. Henryk continued to show improvements with solid post play and Aidan showed his recovery was complete and that he hasn’t lost his shooting touch.
In the final period, Sheffield experimented with different offensive options and player combinations to a varying degree of success. Overall it was a positive if inconsistent performance and a step in the right direction. The boys showed glimpses of how good they can (and should) be but still have much room for improvement, particularly offensively.
